Seminars, Short term Programmes and Symposia 2007-08

The Department of Architecture conducted a number of events for teachers and professionals during the year 2007-2008.

• ‘Language of Architecture’ by Padma Shri Charles Correa
• ‘All Slopes are not Ramps’ a Workshop on Barrier Free Environments done in collaboration with Sukrithi Social Foundation.
• ‘Sustainable cities’, Dr. Stephen Leman, Chair, Architecture, New Castle Univesity, New South Wales.
• Workshop on ‘Heritage Conservation and Management’ along with the Ecole’ de Chaillot, France in collaboration with UNESCO, and ArcH-S, France.
• Workshop on ‘Low cost technology’, by Benny Kuriakose.
• The Padma Shri L.M. Chitale endowment lecture was delivered this year by Architect Sanjay Mohe, MINDSCAPE, Bangalore.
• As part of the culmination of the year long golden jubilee celebrations of the School of Architecture and Planning, a mammoth event ‘Architech Conclave’ was organized by the ‘Alumni Association of SAP’ at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam. The event was inaugurated by His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University. Eminent architects from all over the Country and some from abroad like Prof. B.V.Doshi, Charles Correa, K.T. Ravindran, C.N.Raghavendra Rao, Ar. Ayyapan, Chitra Vishweshwaran, Ar.Jaisim, Ar.Prathima Joshi, Ar.Yatin Pandya, Ar.Eugine Pandala, Christopher Beninger, Harshad Batia, .Prakash Deshmuk, Satya Prakash, Chris Lee etc. presented technical papers. They also interacted with the students and professionals.

Students’ Achievements:

The Schools strength lies in facilitation of interactive learning through paper presentation, participation in competitions etc. this year the Annual NASA Design competition was won by the students of our Institution. Besides, the entry for the G.Sen trophy got a special mention.

In the competition ‘Transparence’ floated by the Saint Gobain Industries the first prize was won by Kavitha M., Malli Saravanan and Satish Vasanth. The second prize was won by Ramanan and Arun Babu. Besides, the entry by Madhumitha, Padmakshi and Sharon Sunder won a special mention.

The first prize in the INSDAG competition for innovative use of steel in Architecture was won by Ramanan and Sandhya. The second prize was won by Solachi Ramanathan, Rekha Ravikumar and Bhavani M
In the Birla White Competition, the students won 3 consolation prizes in Tile Design at National level and a First prize in Glass Reinforced Concrete Design.

The Prof. V.N.Prasad Best Thesis award in Plannin was awarded to Mr. N.V.Arun of the Planning Department.

Besides, our students have presented papers in various forums.

• Deepak of III Year B.Arch. presented the paper’ Architecture as a social responsibility’ and won the first prize in the student’s paper presentation organized at ‘Architech’.
• Anbusivam of II year M.Arch. (Digital) presented a paper ‘ Passive Solar Design system’ at CADRIA Conference at Shanghai
• A Paper titled ‘Green City- A Cognitive Game’ by Shiva Shanker, of 1st M.Arch. (Digital) has been accepted at CADRIA Conference 2007 at Shanghai
