Facilities Available at CBT
The centre has a well defined independent building of about 1000 sq. meters at Taramani Campus with facilities for carrying out research in various areas of biotechnology, housing modern infrastructure to conduct work in Bioprocess technology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, etc. The Administrative building is located in the Main Campus, besides to it a separate Academic Complex is situated exclusively to offer teaching programmes
Some of the Major Equipments available and in use are Plate scintillation counter, Liquid handling system, Gel Documentation system , Deep freezer-80C, FPLC system, HPLC, Ultracentrifuge , Refrigerated centrifuges, Spectrophotometer, Fluorescence spectrophotometer, Deep freezer, Freeze-dryer, 300 lit, Fermenter, Continuous fermenter, CO2 Incubator, Fluorescence & Absorbance Elisa Reader, Computer systems, AKTA Prime, Microprocessor controlled ELISA Reader, Animal Cell Culture Reactor, Sonicator – Multi element and continuous
The Departmental Library of the Centre for Biotechnology has an automated library service system of students and faculty of the centre. Nearly 40 Journals specialized in the filed of Biotechnology at National and International level are subscribed. It has a collection of more than 3000 volumes of best reference books on biotechnology packed subjects. on various topics. E-mail, CD-ROM and Audio-Visual facilities are also available.
Biotechnology Information System (BTIS - DIC)
The centre is one of the Distributed Information Centres (DIC) set up by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Information dissemination and training is one of the mandates of the centre. It also provides Internet facility to students through the Campus network.
Techno Business Incubator (TBI)
The Techno Business Incubator Park is an initiative of the Centre for Biotechnology with a financial support from Department of Biotechnology, Delhi. TBI Park is located at Taramani Campus with an objective:
- To encourage entrepreneurs to develop their technological initiatives to commercial viability.
- To provide sufficient infrastructure for these entrepreneurs so that minimal loss of time can be ensured, before the work commences.
- To provide linkages with the technical expertise available in Anna University and the experimental facilities available at various laboratories elsewhere.
A well-established facility has been developed at Taramani; companies can utilize this facility to develop products of interest. Specific MOU?s will be signed between the Company and University, detailing out the cost and the time frame of operations. The TBI is well equipped with high-end infrastructure, lab space. The support of technical knowledge from CBT is also available.
Foundation of Advancement of Pharmaceutics
The foundation (FAP) is a Chennai based Scientific Research Organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Anna University on July 3, 2002. Strategic intent behind the Industry and Academia is to integrate resources and to do much more than has been hitherto doable. FAP was set up with an objective of investigating molecular entities and pharmaceutical substances, with particular emphasis on those having ethano-botanical provenance. Biotechnologically derived therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics also come within its ambit.
Towards that end, FAP would enable the concordance of investigations for new drug development and, facilitate the fusion of academia with the biopharma industry The FAP is structured as an operational arm for (a) Technology Transfers; (b) Technology Development (c) Technology Absorption.
Presently, FAP co-ordinates and organizes search for new drug molecules in accord with international requirements and is in the process of establishing scientifically managed research laboratories.
These laboratories are dedicated to (i) Evaluation of herbal formulations (ii) Development and evaluation of novel drug delivery systems (iii) Bio-therapeutic and chemotherapeutic evaluation in vitro and in vivo of drug candidates (iv) Optimization of process parameters for the production of metabolites by microbial fermentation and standardization of downstream processing for the development of a bioprocess (v) Biotransformation through kinetic resolution, dynamic kinetic resolution and stereo-inversion in the synthesis of pharmaceutically active compounds.
