INTRODUCTION

AnnaUniversity blossomed to its present status from a humble beginning in 1978 has the first ‘SurveySchool’ in the country to produce land surveys.  AnnaUniversity provide higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.  At present the University offers 33 Undergraduate and 56 Post graduate degree programmes,  5 Post graduate diploma programmes leading to M.Phill, M.S and Doctoral Degree in several branches of Engineering / Technology and Applied Sciences.  Over 600 faculty members, catering to student strength of over 6000 out of which 27 percent are woman students, support the University.  The University receives grant from the State and Central Governments, National and International Agencies and Industrial houses.  It has an extensive interaction with Indian Industries, National Research Laboratories and InternationalUniversities.  This enables the University to keep pace with new developments.  NAAC has recognized the University as Five Star status.  IRS is the Tamil Nadu State Remote Sensing Applications Centre.

The Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) was established in 1982 by AnnaUniversity with the funds provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Over the years, the infrastructural facilities have been gradually built-up using development grants mainly from Ministry of Human Resources Development, University Grants Commission, Federal Republic of Germany, Government of India and Department of Agriculture of Government of Tamil Nadu. At present, the Institute is rated as one of the best in the country in the areas of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System and Large Scale Mapping. The Institute functions as an autonomous unit of AnnaUniversity, governed by an executive committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor and the recurring grants for maintenance are provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. As an externally assisted project, The Federal Republic of Germany has provided assistance worth 7 million DM towards equipment, exchange of staff and for conducting a 4-year engineering Under-Graduate program, B.E. (Geoinformatics), which is the only program of its kind in this country. The Institute has about 2400 square metres of built-up space for various laboratories equipped with sophisticated instruments and machinery worth Rs.150 million. The main building and laboratories are centrally air-conditioned.

VISION

The Remote Sensing and GIS technology should be fully utilized to manage the natural resources and the environment in a sustainable manners and to provide Global security in all sectors of Society.

MISSION STATEMent

  • To run the academic programmes of the Univrsity in the discipline of Remote Sensing and GIS.

  • To transfer Remote Sensing Technology and its applications to various user agencies To provide extension services to the user agencies in advisory capacity or by undertaking operational projects as service provider .

  • To undertake R & D projects and organize Workshops and Seminars to promote the cause of Remote Sensing Technology

  • To contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of other organisations in the fields of natural resources and environment.

ORGANISATION

  • First State Centre to be established in 1982 within Anna University on par with RRSSC Facilities (VAX 11/780)

  • First State Centre to have full-fledged Photogrammetric mappingfacility in the entire country established with help of Federal Republic of Germany – several Scientists/Officers from National Remote Sensing Agency, Survey of India have been trained here at this centre in the field of Photogrammetry.  Several areas of Tamil Nadu have been mapped at a larger scale using the Photogrammetric plotters.

  • First State Centre to establish a GIS Digital Data Base at 1:50,000 scale using Remote Sensing and other ground data base and Ground Water Recharge for the entire State of Tamil Nadu were prepared even before the implementation of NRIS.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The Centre since 1983 have carried out Operational Projects worth more than Rs.25 Corers.

  • First Centre to start Post Graduate Diploma in Remote Sensing in the Country and later upgraded to Masters level Degree Course in Remote Sensing during 1983.

  • First in the entire Asian Sub-Continent to start a Four Year undergraduate  B.E. (Geoinformatics) Course.

  • Our academic programmes are massive providing for 160 UG students, 40 PG students and 10 Ph.D scholars every year.

  • Several of our alumni are currently at different levels of Senior Positions in Department of Space and in Geomatics Industry.

  • IRS has been recognised by Government of India for demarcating Low Tide Level (LTL) and High Tide Level (HTL).

  • IRS has been recognized as central repository of all the GIS activities of Tamil Nadu by Government of Tamil Nadu.
