This project addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We proposed semantic component that enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. Further, we proposed semantic grid architecture by implementing knowledge layer at the top of gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The Ontology template has been created by considering all possible types of computing resources in the grid environment and protégé-OWL APIs is effectively used to update the template. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the ontology template to discover suitable resources.
The project also addresses the problem of describing grid services semantically thereby enabling easier and efficient discovery of grid services. We propose matchmaking system that performs matchmaking of requested grid services with that of advertised ones to discover best suitable service. The matchmaking algorithm implemented in our matchmaking system considers functionality of the requested service as critical factor for faster and accurate discovery of services. Unlike conventional matchmaking algorithm where service discovery is based on Inputs and Outputs, our algorithm retrieves similar services based on functionality and compares their Inputs and Outputs with that of the requested ones thereby improving the performance of the matchmaking system
