HISTORY
The
School of E.C.E. has the distinction of having a separate Lab
for Medical Electronics as early as 1975. Elective subjects
were offered in the field of Medical Electronics since then.
A Post Graduate degree specializing in Medical Electronics was
introduced in 1993 – the first of its kind among Indian
Universities and recently accredited with a grade "A"
by the National Board of Accreditation, All India Council for
Technical Education(AICTE), India. The Center offers core courses
in Biomedical Instrumentation, Equipments, Biosignal processes
and Medical Imaging including a course in Anatomy and Physiology.
The latest technologies have been incorporated in twelve Elective
courses spread over Laser & Ultrasonic applications in Medicine,
Rehabilitation Engineering, Medical Informatics, Physiological
Simulation, Radiological Equipments, Hospital Equipment and
Management, Microprocessor and Computers applied to Medicine,
etc.
A four week training in hospital or any Medical Electronics
industry accompanied by a six month project in Research &
Development activities of Industries or hospital are part of
the curriculum.

MILESTONES National
and International Recognition
The pioneering work done by the Center for Medical Electronics
in the various fields of Medical Sciences has won for it both
National and International acclaim. To mention a few of the
activities of the Center in the past;
It
has designed and developed an 8-channel, 12 bit, computerized
data acquisition system with freedom to choose various combinations
of channels and displays. Application of advanced signal processing
techniques as Wavelet transforms, Neural Network and Genetic
Algorithm based solutions leading to identification of abnormalities
of Electrocardiography, Vectorcardiography and Cardiac Activity.
It
has developed a low-cost video add-on card to Personal Computers
to enable capturing of Medical-still images with 8-bit resolution.
It
has researched in the area of Medical Imaging with emphasis
on angiographic images to yield various parameters like volumes
at end systole and end diastole, compliance, ventricular circumferential
fibre shortening, and other ventricular volume and contractile
parameters.
It
has developed an educational multimedia CD-ROM package for the
cardiovascular system, dealing with the anatomy of the heart,
simulation of the various cardiovascular dynamics like the sequential
formulation of Electrocardiography, Vectorcardiography, diastole
and systole.
It
has also developed various other simulation packages for arrhythmia
classification, blood volume control mechanism, cardiac healthcare
system applying fuzzy logic, and an Electro-Myography system
Apart from the regular project works, the gadgets done by the
students at the Center have won both National and International
awards.
