HISTORY
Having
been in the service of the nation in particular and humanity
in general, the College of Engineering, Guindy, has never missed
an opportunity to redefine its role in contributing to a better
society, creating opportunities on its own when required. This
is obvious from the fact that it has grown in stature from a
survey school to a full fledged technical university catering
to the needs of the public and private sectors alike.

It was such realistic thinking, combined with a never-ending
thirst for excellence, which led to the formation of the Production
Engineering Division in the year 1963, thus marking the beginning
of an era of specialized orientation towards improving production
concepts and practices. After some time, encouraged by the enthusiastic
response from the industries, it was decided to mould the department
into a Centre for Excellence which would offer programmes that
incorporated state-of-the-art curricula and courses.Senior staff
members from various leading educational institutions and experts
from several major industries were invited to plan and draft
the curriculum so as to ensure that the students would receive
cutting-edge education and training that would make them invaluable
assets to any organization that employed them. Thus was born
the Manufacturing Engineering Division. It incorporated the
strengths and infrastructure of the Production Engineering Division
with a spirit of revolutionary thinking and with the impetus
on creativity and innovation. It was decided to award the students
with a Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, rather
than in Production Engineering, so as to keep in line with international
trends. The Manufacturing Engineer is not just the Production
Engineer of the the future. Indeed, the whole idea motivating
this department is not just to be content with looking at the
future as it comes. The motto here is to mould the future.
The motto of the DOME is to be a leader in academics, applied and, academic research. We put our best efforts to produce future leaders for industry, academia, government, and society -- leaders whose vision is founded upon fundamental knowledge, analytical skills, creativity, perspective, and ethics. We seek to advance technology and science by combining basic knowledge with the innovative application of manufacturing engineering and related scientific principles.
Our academic mission is to prepare students for careers involving technological innovation and leadership. Our undergraduate educational program provides a broad base on which successful careers in engineering and a number of other fields can be founded, whereas the graduate program aims to prepare specialists, professionals, and scholars in Computer Integrated Manufacturing engineering. The research mission of the Department -- which is to create knowledge, technologies and ideas through fundamental research and its application.
The teaching and research programs in the Department are organized according to both disciplinary and inter-disciplinary themes. We cover all of the core disciplinary areas of materials and mechanical engineering including Dynamics, Controls, Solid Mechanics, Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Precision and Nanoengineering, Management, Operations Research and Design.
The
department is headed by Dr. S.Gowri and is home to the
CEG chapter of the Association of Manufacturing Engineers. The
mission of the department is clearly stated on the wooden plaque
that greets visitors to the department -"To educate and train
students of Manufacturing Engineering in Design, Production,
Maintenance, Management and other allied fields who will be
competent to determine factors involved in the manufacture of
products and to direct the production processes with a strong
emphasis on quality, ecology and nation building. The department
has three main goals :-
1.
To train students in the latest areas of Manufacturing Engineering
such as Computer Integrated Manufacturing
2. To teach quality and ecology consciousness to students.
3. To develop a centre of excellence and continuous improvement
in Manufacturing Engineering.
