HISTORY
IOM is an autonomous and advanced center that functions under Faculty of Civil Engineering, Anna University from the year 1998 – with a mission on management of ocean and coastal environment and their resources for sustainable livelihood security of coastal and ocean dependent communities and users through research, education and training.

IOM undertakes research and consultancy projects in the areas of Ocean and Coastal Resources Management, Environmental Monitoring (Ocean/ coastal water and sediment), Environmental Impact Assessment for Coastal Development, Aqua culture Site Selection, Application of Remote Sensing in Coastal Zone Management, Coastal Ecosystems/ Marine Resources Management, Information Technology for Coastal and Marine Area Management, Remote Sensing and GIS applications for Coastal Ecosystems, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Marine Chemistry & Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography, Bio diversity Management, Coastal Pollution & Coastal Aqua culture, Harbour Area Management and Global Climate Change and Biogeochemistry of greenhouse gases.

IOM is involved in providing capacity building training on Integrated Coastal Zone Management for Central/ State Government authorities by conducting International/ National Seminars/ Symposia/ Workshops etc.

IOM has excellent infrastructure facilities such as Workstations, Servers, PCs, Digitizers, Plotters, Printers and Scanners for performing Remote Sensing and GIS related works. It also has a good analytical Instrumentation Laboratory containing Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (graphite furnace), Gas Chromatograph, UV Visible Spectrophotometer, Spectroflourometer, Particle Size Analyzer, Research Microscope, Radio-Tracer lab, Ion Chromatograph etc. for carrying out environmental monitoring and analysis. Several computer application softwares like ERDAS, EASI PACE, ARC INFO, ARC VIEW, ORACLE etc. are also available.
