ENVIS a Glance:

     Environmental Information System (ENVIS) is a planned program of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. ENVIS is a decentralized system using the distributed network of databases to ensure integration of National efforts in Environmental information collection, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned including policy planners, decision makers, research workers and the public.
     The ENVIS network presently consists of 26 ENVIS Centers on diverse areas of environment such as Control of pollution, Toxic chemicals, Environmentally sound and appropriate technologies, Biodegradation of wastes, Renewable energy, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, Biodiversity, NGOs related to environment, Occupational Health, Desertification, Mangroves, Environmental Education, Faunal Biodiversity, Floral Biodiversity, Solid waste management, Human Settlement, Forestry, Wildlife, Himalayan ecology, Bio-geochemisry and environmental law, Avian ecology, communication mining, Coastal Zone Management etc . These Centers have been set up in specialized and reputed institutions in the country.
     The ENVIS network with its 26 nodes continued its activities in collection of information, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to its users during the year. The ENVIS nodes, known as ENVIS centers in 26 subject specific areas, constitute the ENVIS network, and act as the focal point for the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The focal point of ENVIS and its network partners laid emphasis on the development of its information-base by creating comprehensive databases and strengthening its information resource repository in the concern subject area.

COZMA a View :
     
To deal with information on "Coastal Zone Management" the Ministry for Environment and forests established the 26th ENVIS node in India at Institute for Ocean Management, (COZMA), Anna University. The aim of the center is to collect, collate and disseminate information relevant to the Coastal Zone Management aspects

Objectives COZMA: 
  •  To develop well equipped information center on Coastal Zone management.

  •  To apply the modern technologies of acquisition processing, storage and retrieval of Coastal Zone  Management topics to support and promote research and development towards sustainable Integrated  Coastal Zone Management planning.

  •  To promote national and international co-operation and liaison in exchange of knowledge base on  coastal and island management.
