The Department of Architecture, School of Architecture & Planning a premier institution in the country was established in the year 1957 under the University of Madras and later was annexed to the Anna University in the year 1978. The Department consolidated its aspiration to serve the society at large by establishing the M. Arch. program in 1986 and presently runs two specialized courses namely M. Arch. (Digital Arch.) and M. Arch. (Landscape Arch.) as self supporting programs which were started in the year 2002. The institution has a QIP Cell established by the AICTE which has provided research facilities for teachers of other architectural institutions, besides conducting a number of Short term training courses.

The Department has been upgraded from time to time to comply with the minimum standards of Architectural Education Regulations, prescribed by Council of Architecture by updating its syllabus; adding the required infrastructure and taking up consultancy and research projects to provide valuable inputs into the Design studios.

The B. Arch. program has recognition from the Commonwealth Association of Architects up to its III year and is shortly applying for its full recognition. The M. Arch. (Digital Arch.) program is also a unique program being the only one offered in the country and has gained recognition internationally.

The department is well equipped not only in terms of its infrastructure but also in terms of its faculty strengths with areas of specialization being Architecture and Advanced Studies, Planning, Energy studies, History and traditional studies, Landscape, Product and Interior Design
