The Center offers core courses in Biomedical Instrumentation, Equipments, Biosignal processing and Medical Imaging including a course in Anatomy and Physiology. The latest technologies have been incorporated in twelve elective courses spread over Laser & Ultrasonic applications in Medicine, Rehabilitation Engineering, Medical Informatics, Physiological Simulation, Radiological Equipments, Hospital Equipment and Management, Microprocessor and Computers applied to Medicine etc. A Post Graduate degree specializing in Medical Electronics was introduced in 1993 the first of its kind among Indian Universities. In July 2006, a new course M.E (Bio Medical Engineering) has been started in the centre.

A four week training in hospital or any Medical Electronics industry accompanied by a six month project in Research & Development activities of Industries or hospital are part of the curriculum.

Brief Write up of Most Successful Research Projects

A Method of Hystero Electrical Activity Mapping

The main objective of this invention is to develop an acceptable methodology which will help the obstetrician to know the exact condition of the uterine activity taking place at different phases of delivery. Sequential imaging of this technique will provide the condition to which the foetus is exposed. The main feature of this invention is it is fully non invasive. The uterine activity in a multi channel format and foetal electrocardiographic signal are recorded and processed to give the uterine activity and the foetal heart rate simultaneously. This provided information about the condition of the foetus under various stages labour. One other feature is that this can be used up to onset of labour also.
Only a part of this work is being done in other parts of the world and since no such equipment is available for obstetrical monitoring, especially during labour, development of this equipment will help obstetricians and benefit the society.

Online Telehealth Consultation System

Online Telehealth video consultation system is a communication suit for voice and media service over IP networks. The Critical Care Management is also made available through this telehealth website. The online medical information system with ICD coding standard is in the final stages of completion and could be integrated with telehealth website to facilitate the patients to have access to the basic information regarding the 1751 diseases, 932 symptoms, 1640 tests and examinations, 8733 drugs in addition to meaningful information on their relationships. Through this interface doctors can have live interactions with their patients along with necessary clinical data obtained online, enabling in the process a better diagnosis. JAVA programmes are used to build the interface.

Expert System for Audiologists

An expert system has been developed for the audiologist for conducting the various test taken with the hearing impaired patients for assessing the degree of hearing loss and type of loss in a systematic manner and arriving at recommendations of Real EAR Insertion Gain(REIG) required for the different frequencies.

Taking all these considerations into account an expert system has been designed in consultation with department of audio logy of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. Standard algorithms are incorporated in addition to utilizing Experts knowledge domain in order to meet any requirements needed for these patients. A computer based audiometer for performing pure tone audiogram and speech audiogram is also being developed to support the above system.
