The Division of Transportation Engineering of Department of Civil Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, has been offering a Master's Degree (M.E) Programme in Urban Engineering from the year 1974. Over the years based on the employment potentials and demand from user agencies this course has been thought of primarily as M.E Transportation Engineering course. To this effect the name of the Division has already been changed by the University from Urban Engineering to Transportation Engineering.

Courses Offered are in areas such as Transportation Planning and System, Traffic Engineering and Management, Sustainable Urban Development, Traffic Flow Theory and Analysis, Transport Economics, Systems Simulation Modeling, Environmental Impact Assessment of Transportation Projects, Road Safety Auditing, Highway Planning, Design and Materials etc.

Courses on Transportation Engineering including highways, airways, railways and waterways are offered to B.E (Civil) and B.E (Geo Informatics) students. Electives such as Transportation Planning and Systems, Traffic Engineering and Management, are also offered to them. Undergraduate students are encouraged to take projects in these areas. Doctoral research facilities are available in the area of Urban Transportation Planning and Management and Highway Design Planning and Management.

The transportation Engineering Division has state of art Traffic Engineering and Highway Engineering Laboratory with Dopplar Radar, Sound Level Meter, ROMDAS, Automatic Marshall Specimen Testing Machine, Automatic Marshall Compaction Machine, Aggregate Impact Testing Machine, Los Angels Abrasion Testing Machine, Benkleman Beam, Skid Resistance Tester, Merlin etc. Computer Laboratory has latest computing units and latest softwares like Emme/2, CUBE, TRANSCAD, TRANSYT, MXROAD, HDM-4, Geomedia, Arcview, Arc Info etc.

Areas of Research Interest

Transportation Engineering faculty are actively involved in Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Studies, Traffic Signal Design, Planning of Road Networks, Planning of Transport Infrastructure like Terminals, grade separators, etc., Mass Transport Planning and Performance Evaluation, Highway Planning, Design and Maintenance. The User Agencies are CMDA, HUDCO, TNHB, CMA, Chennai Corporation, DTCP, APWD, TNUIFSL, MTC, Municipalities in Tamil Nadu.
