The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was carved out of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1987 with the mission to raise the Quality of Computer Education and Research.

The department's primary objective is to keep pace with the new developments and emerging technologies and to impart this knowledge in an effective manner.

The department has obtained a project funding of Rs. 98.9 lakhs from MIT, Government of India for setting up Resource Center for Indian Language solution- Tamil and the project has been completed. Now it has obtained two major projects from MIT, for Introducing new courses in Language Technology and Information Security. The department has been identified by UGC and granted major grants under DRS Phase II, COSIST and FIST Programme to do research in the areas of database and web technology. Microsoft University research Programme is also underway at the Department and working in C# and .Net.

Brief Write up of Most Successful Research Projects:

Value Added Services in Regional Language on Handheld Devices
The motivation behind this project ‘Value Added Services in Regional Language on Handheld Devices’ was to provide the rural population with an easy to use, open source, non-proprietary tool that enables them to use Tamil as a language of communication. This application enables the user to create and maintain Contacts and Schedules in Tamil Language, Value Added Services in three different domains (Railways, Airways and Stock) have been implemented which enables a user to make a versatile query in these domains. This allows the user to retrieve the live information in Regional Language.

Intelligent Information Retrieval of Thirukkural in Handheld Devices
This project is intended to provide intelligent information retrieval of Thirukkural in hand held devices. A Tamil user can make a versatile query in this domain and it will be presented with its abstract on his mobile phone.
Entire Thirukkural domain (Chapters and its abstract) along with its lexical chains and synonym set has been created. Semantic processing of Thirukkural domain has been implemented and hosted in a Web server. Mobile users with CPRS connection can enable Keyword and Concept based retrieval from this domain and retrieves the desired information.

Tamil Keypad Software Testing and Development for Mobile Phones
This project is aimed to implement different Tamil Keypad layouts which could be analyzed and tested for efficiency providing valuable information to the Committee named “Standardization of Tamil in Mobile phones” to take a decision on the optimality of the keypads.
In this project, three different keypad layouts have been implemented and SMS message transfer between the mobile phones using Tamil software has been enabled. Moreover, we customized this application to enable the Keypad evaluation.
