Internal Combustion Engineering
The laboratory is equipped with dynamometers like eddy current, direct current, swinging field and hydraulic type with measuring capabilities upto 250 kW. Highly sophisticated instruments like Analog Digital converter with systems studying the combustion characteristics and analysers for measuring CO, HC, NOx and smoke meter for pollution measurements are available. Facilities are also available to test fuels and lubricants in Fuel Chemistry Laboratory. The division also undertakes consultancy work and testing of engines and their related components as per BIS |

The ever increasing price of fossil fuel and stringent emission norms laid down by the government has rekindled the interest of use of turpentine as fuel in IC engines. The literature on properties of turpentine, projects that it can be a good substitute fuel for Diesel oil. This invention mainly focused towards the application of turpentine in the diesel engine to estimate the possible diesel replacement fraction by blending it with diesel. This blend is capable of running the existing DI diesel engine without any modifications. This invention also proved that, the addition of turpentine along with diesel oil would improve engine performance and emission characteristics, which is better than that of diesel baseline operation.
Eucalyptus blend composition with diesel oil (Patent application No: 794/CHE/2007) Eucalyptus oil was used and tested in SI engine successfully. Based on few suitable properties of eucalyptus oil, it can also be utilized as a diesel oil replacement. The primary objective of the invention is to find out the feasibility of application of eucalyptus in the DI diesel engines without any modifications in the engine hardware. This invention also brought out the improved performance and emission characteristics of eucalyptus and diesel oil blend |
