ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

The Department of Mathematics, is one of the largest units in Anna University with a faculty strength of 35, catering to the needs of the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in Science, Engineering & Technology. It has started its exclusive M.Sc. programme in Mathematics in 1975. In 1979, it introduced research programmes leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Mathematics. Subsequently in 1993, it started M.Sc. Mathematics with Diversification in Computer Science, which was renamed as M.Sc. (Computer Science) in 1997. From the year 2001, Five-year Integrated M.Sc. Programmes in Computer Science and Information Technology are being offered.

COMPUTING FACILITIES:

The Department has two Personal Computer Laboratories from which students of Mathematics and Computer Science, Research Scholars and Faculty members can access the computing facilities of the University as well as Internet. The Laboratory is equipped with 2 PENTIUM-III servers and 100 PENTIUM Nodes with a LAN facility under WINDOWS/LINUX platforms. Also 20 digital systems trainer kits are available to cater to the needs of the Integrated M.Sc. Students.

Brief Write up of Most Successful Research Projects:

Studies on optimal maintenance and replacement of deteriorating systems The necessity and the mathematical sophistication of maintenance and replacement models have increased in parallel to the growth of the complexity of modern systems. The broad spectrum of models dealing with repair/replacement can be classified into 2 categories:-

• Time to failure models where the system is characterized by the distribution function of the time to failure and
• Phenomenological models which characterize explicitly the underlying physical mechanism, which causes the failure.

While shock models fall under the second category, general repair models and monotonic process models come under the first. The objective of the proposal is to develop a comprehensive analysis of preventive maintenance and replacement policies
