Head : Dr. B. Kothandaraman The B.Tech. programme in Rubber Technology was started in 1988-89 by the Division of Rubber Technology with active guidance from the Rubber Industry and Trade Bodies associated with Rubber namely, All India Rubber Industries Association and Indian Rubber Institute, and very soon its students found acceptance in the Industry. The Division was upgraded as Department in 2002 and the B.Tech. Programme was renamed as B.Tech. Rubber and Plastics Technology in 2000. The strength of its programme is, its students have made a mark in the Rubber Industry especially in the small and medium scale sectors. It also offers M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D. programmes. |

Brief Write up of Most Successful Research Projects:
EPDM-Silica based rocket propellant fuel tank linings –the project aimed to develop materials for lining of fuel tanks for rockets- this was sponsored by DRDL and later the coordinator indicated that he may get another project to productionise this. Development of rubber bellows for ocean applications: National Institute of Ocean Technology has given a contract to Philip Hydraulics , Chennai-32 for developing some systems for use in Ocean out of which one part was the fabrication of bellows – the bellows were large sized(height 1 m and diameter of 400 mm) and only 3 pieces were needed-no industry will come forward to make it as it will entail huge losses in the form of mould cost – Philip Hydraulics constructed the moulds and the materials were suggested by the coordinator and under the supervision of the coordinator the fabrication was done and supplied to the Industry |
