The department has a rare distinction of having a separate Medical Electronics Laboratory which dates back to 1975. Considering the Infrastructure facilities and the activities taken up in the Medical Electronics Lab, Anna University has established a separate CENTRE FOR MEDICAL ELECTRONICS in 1997.
The centre for Medical Electronics is functioning with a goal to develop technical manpower to meet the national demand in the area of Medical Electronics and to achieve the national goal of 'Health for All'.
It has received assistance in the form of Medical equipments and man power training from the German Government for conducting Bio-Medical course upto doctoral level. The PG programme(M.E. in Medical Electronics) offered by the centre is well recognised by hospitals and universities in India and abroad. The units developed at this centre has won international and national recognition in the form of 3 times Vincent Bendix Award from IEEE (USA) and 3 times National Technology Award from the Government of India. The centre has established close links with medical electronics industry and with hospitals. A consortium of medical electronics has been instituted and 5 MoU's have been signed with institutions like Redington India Pvt. Ltd., Apollo Hospitals Pvt. Ltd., Madras Medical College and Islamic University of Bangladesh for joint research activities.
