Anna University blossomed to its present status from a humble beginning in 1978, as the first ‘SurveySchool’ in the country to produce land surveyors. The Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) was established in 1982 by Anna University with the funds provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Over the years, the infrastructural facilities have been gradually built-up using development grants mainly from Ministry of Human Resources Development, University Grants Commission, Federal Republic of Germany, Government of India and Department of Agriculture of Government of Tamil Nadu. At present, the Institute is rated as one of the best in the country in the areas of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System and Large Scale Mapping. The Institute functions as an autonomous unit of Anna University, governed by an executive committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor and the recurring grants for maintenance are provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. As an externally assisted project, Federal Republic of Germany has provided assistance worth 7 million DM towards equipment, exchange of staff and for conducting a 4-year engineering Under-Graduate program, B.E. (Geoinformatics), The Institute has about 2400 square metres of built-up space for various laboratories equipped with sophisticated instruments and machinery worth Rs.150 million. The Royal Norwegian emphasis as a part of Indo Norwegian Institutional Cooperation Programme has supported the institute to a tune of 1.1 crores for selected research projects and infrastructure development. Also, the IRS is member of UN-GGIM Network.
Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University, shall strive hard to develop and impart technical knowledge and professional skills required for Civil and Geo-Informatics Engineering practice through excellence in teaching, research and consultancy to address sustainable infrastructure development needs at local, national and international levels.
Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University shall contribute to technological and social development by:
Institute of Remote Sensing supports to run undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree courses of the University in the discipline of Remote Sensing and GIS. The institute is pioneer in offering graduate and postgraduate degrees in the field of Geoinformatics. A PG Diploma in Remote Sensing is started in 1980, which is updated to M.Tech in Remote Sensing in 1983. Realising the developments in the field of Geoinformatics, an undergraduate programme in Geoinformatics (B.E. Geoinformatics) is started in 1993 (first of its kind in India). A post graduate programme in Geomatics has started in 2002 for the benefit of B.E. Geoinformatics students.

The answer to Chennai’s repeated struggles of sourcing enough drinking water lies within restoring and protecting water bodies that are rapidly vanishing. A recent study funded by the Central government’s Department of Science and Technology, has ascertained this as the most viable solution for ending the city’s perpetual water shortage. On analyzing images provided by Anna University’s Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) in the years 2008 and 2017, most water bodies in Kancheepuram were falling prey to encroachment while the ones in Tiruvallur were vanishing due to lack of restoration by the government.

It’s rare to hear the news of tornado or twister reported in India, especially in South India. However, this northeast monsoon , labeled as ‘once in a century’ extreme rainfall event, saw a weak twister hitting a village in Sankarankoil in Tirunelveli damaging a few houses on November 18. The rare occurrence has largely gone unreported, but now the researchers are chancing upon the opportunity to study the event for deeper understanding. Scientists at Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation Research of Anna University and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology are likely to do a case study, but the challenge would be to get the radar images.

From a spot on top of St Thomas Mount on April 10 began an epic 2,400 km journey that mapped the ends of the country. An expedition that criss-crossed hill and vale, traversed forest and harsh terrain, from Kanyakumari in the South to the Himalayas in the North. A journey that found that Peak XV with no known local name was the tallest in world, which earned them the right to name it after the the previous leader of the expedition, George Everest. The entire survey could have involved up to 40,000 people and the work claimed many lives,” says S S Ramakrishnan, Director, Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University. He adds that the manpower for the survey came from students of the Survey School in Fort St George.

Geohorizon is a national level technical symposium conducted annually by the Society of Geoinformatics Engineers. Initiated in 2005, it is one of the first geospatial symposiums to be organized and held in India. It is a flagship event that aims to exhibit the talents of potential novices in the geospatial domain. It also acts as a platform to induce team spirit among the students and helps them to build connections by participating in various events and workshops. It has a nationwide reach with many industries and institutes that connect the students of both undergraduate and postgraduate level. For the past sixteen editions, GeoHorizon has been a platform for the young enthusiasts to explore the depths of the latest geospatial technologies, and has also brought together and honoured the contribution professional students in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS.

Center for Survey Training and Research (CSTAR) was established in Anna University in the year of 2004 to impart training to the officials of the Survey and Land Records Department (SLRD), Government of Tamil Nadu using the funds sanctioned by Central and State Government under the erstwhile “Strengthening Revenue Administration and updating of Land records (SRA & ULR)”.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Anna University and Government of Tamil Nadu to impart training to SLRD officials and to guide SLRD in the modernization programmes and to carry out research and developmental activities in field of cadastral survey and technology.
The CSTAR is managed through an executive council. The Vice Chancellor is the chairman of the Executive council with representation from both Government of Tamil Nadu and Anna University.
The center’s activities are coordinated by a professor in Civil Engineering of Anna University with Director of Survey and Settlements, SLRD, GoTN.
The primary duty of the center is to conduct training SLRD officials on the “Modern surveying” which is being done on continuous basis. The center can support activities not catering directly to the SLRD like:
The industries and organizations interested in obtaining mapping and spatial data analysis services indicated above, but not limited to, can send their queries by post/email to us.
So far, around 4500 people from SLRD have been trained under 2 weeks -, 4 weeks- programmes by the center with periodic revision and upgradation of the syllabus.
A regular 30-day training program is imparted to the officials of SLRD with duly approved syllabus by resource persons drawn from University and outside with hands practice on the modern survey instruments and processing software. The field experiments are conducted with the help of skilled technicians. Evaluation is based on theoretical and practical exams.
The Center has well established work area including two class rooms for 25 people each, a store/ equipment room and a lab for data processing. The field experiments are conducted partly in-campus and partly in the areas of resurvey.
Institute of Remote Sensing has the following laboratories:
All the above laboratories are having modern equipment and latest software to carryout the R & D Projects.
