Tamil Nadu is endowed with major minerals such as Limestone, Magnesite, Graphite, Bauxite, Iron Ore, Vermiculite, minor minerals such as Granites, Clay, Silica sand, Lignite, fuel minerals such as Petroleum and Natural Gas and atomic minerals such as Monazite, Rutile, Ilmenite. The value of mineral production (excludes atomic mineral) in Tamil Nadu placed approximately at Rs. 7,287 crores. The State contributed about 3% to the total value of mineral production in the country. The principal minerals produced in the State were lignite, natural gas (utilised), limestone, petroleum (crude), magnesite, garnet (abrasive), graphite (r.o.m.), bauxite, and vermiculite which together accounted for about 94% of the total value of the minerals produced in the State. The value of production of minor minerals such as clay, quartz and feldspar, etc was estimated at 438 crores. The number of reporting mines at present in the state is 252 mines.

To cater the needs of the mines located in the states of Tamilnadu and Kerala, the Department of Mining Engineering was re-established in the year of 1987 with a strength of 25 students. Now it has evolved gradually into a school for academics, scientific research and cutting edge technologies. A good number of research papers are published and presented every year by both the students as well as the faculty members in he National / International Journals, Seminars, Symposia and Workshops stretching over a wide range of innovative topics related to the mineral industry. Keeping in pace with the recent global developments, a couple of advanced technology courses such as Marine Mining are also being taught in undergraduate levels. Since 2015, the girl students are permitted to take admission in the Mining Engineering course.

To cater the academic requirements of the Department, our faculty members have the right blend of industry, teaching, research, consultancy and administrative experience resulting in multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary activities within the institute and outside. The Department is actively pursuing research and consultancy projects inviting industry experts from National institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), NLC India Limited, Singareni Collieries Company Limited, Ramco Cements Limited, India Cements Limited, Dalmia (B) Cements Limited, Ultra Tech Cements Limited, Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited, GEM Granites, L&T ECC, Airport Authority of India, Mumbai Port Trust, Tamilnadu Minerals (TAMIN), Tamilnadu Cements (TANCEM), Tamilnadu Magnesite (TANMAG), etc. A number of study tours and camps are also conducted for the benefit of the mining engineering students every year for better understanding of the mining industry. Guest lectures are also arranged by experts from industry, research organizations and educational institutions, etc., regularly through physical and online modes. Besides, the Alumni visit the department and interacts with the students and deliver technical lectures to motivate them to achieve excellence in academics.

It is pleased to state that the Deep-Sea Mining Simulation laboratory sponsored by NIOT, Chennai, first of its kind among the educational institutions in our country, has been installed in the Department, in the name of ‘Soil-Machine Interaction Laboratory’ for the value of Rs. 3.7 Crores. Besides, the Department has the latest computing facilities with state-of-the-art software like DATAMINE, Rock science, UDEC, Galena, Fraglyst 6.0, ArcGIS etc.

In addition to the above, the Department of Mining Engineering is presently in the process of making ‘Memorandum of Association’ (MoA) with M/s. Orica Explosives Limited, Kolkata and M/s. Star Trace Private Limited, Chennai for providing necessary facility in the field of advanced rock blasting and pilot plant for processing of mineral.

The graduates passing out from this Department are suitably placed through campus and off campus recruitment modes, in the prestigious mining firms such as NLC India Limited, Coal India Limited, Hindustan Zinc Limited, BALCO, Hindustan Copper, NALCO, India Cements, Dalmia Bharat Cements, Ramco Cements, GMMCO-Caterpillar, Thriveni Earth Movers Limited, DMT, UltraTech Cements, ACC Cements, L&T ECC, TANCEM, etc. Besides, a considerable number of alumni have also cleared UPSC and TNPSC exams at regular intervals, and occupying the positions such as IAS, IFS, etc.

The Department is actively involved in student activities through Society of Mining Engineers (SME), organising the events such as EARTH and SURANG, an Annual National Student’s Symposium since 2006.
