The Department of Printing Technology, Anna University Chennai is on the cusp of a momentous occasion signifying its coming of age the completion of 34 years of its existence as a Centre of Excellence in Printing Technology. The College of Engineering, Anna University was the first institution in India to start a degree course in Printing Technology under the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from the year 1983. Since then, it has developed into a full-fledged independent department in the year 1994 with the help and support from all its stakeholders the industry, exuberant staff and enthusiastic students.

The Department offers B.E. (Full Time & Part Time), M.S. (By Research) and Ph.D. programme in Printing Technology and M.E (Full Time) degree programme in Printing and Packaging Technology from the academic year 2009-10. The laboratories are well equipped with modern machines, state-of-the-art equipment and latest softwares to enable the students in developing their practical knowledge. The Department also receives good support and encouragement from the Printing and Packaging industry all over the country which facilitates 100% placement for the students of the Department every year.

The Department is involved in carrying out research in various fields viz., Machine Printing, Colour Management, Digital Printing, Printing and Packaging, Material Testing, Quality Control, Printing Management. The Department has received a research grant of about Rs.45.00 lakhs from various funding agencies like AICTE, DST, UGC and State Plan under different schemes. The Department also received around Rs.70.00 lakhs under TEQIP funds out of which latest Single Colour Sheet fed Offset Printing machine and Programmable Cutting machine were purchased in order to enhance the existing laboratory facilities.The Department also received around Rs.75 lakhs under UGC-SAP funds out which Blown Film extruder was established to enhance the laboratory facilities.The Department also received around 63.00 lakhs under DBT funds out which Microfab Jetlab 4*L printing system was procured for research activities.

Apart from the academic activities, the Department takes active steps in shaping the students into full-fledged engineers to face the challenges of the latest technology with confidence in the industries through a forum called Society of Printing Engineers (SPE). It provides a platform for the students to explore their inate talents and create oppurtunities to interact with doyens in the Printing, Publishing and Packaging industry. By considering the industrial growth in Packaging Sector in the year 2019 the B.E. Printing Technology programme has been renamed as B.E. Printing and Packaging Technology. Consequently, the department is also renamed Department of Printing and Packaging Technology.
