Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Applied Chemistry

The two-year (four semesters) Masters Programme in Applied Chemistry was introduced as a flagship course under the Department of Chemistry in the year 1975. This course aims at providing a holistic understanding of various aspects of chemistry to develop critical and analytical skills. The course is well designed which involves active participation of students in teaching and learning via discussions, presentations, seminars and viva. The course caters the need of the industry and academia making the student ready for work. After completion of M.Sc. Degree students have wide opportunity in top industries and institutions in India and abroad.

Course Eligibility:

Candidates with B.Sc Chemistry/ Applied Science with 50% mark (45% for SC/ST/PH) from a recognized university. Admissions to the M.Sc. program are done on the basis of Common Admission Test (CAT) scores.

Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Polymer Science and Engineering

Department of Chemistry expanded its wing in 1995 to offer its M.Tech. Programme with a specialization in Polymer science and Engineering. This programme aims at preparing the students to gain hands on experience and knowledge in various fields related to polymer science and technology. This course has been tailored by leading experts from industries and academicians from reputed universities. This course covers concepts from basic to advanced chemical engineering processes, which indeed provides expertise in the field of polymer science and technology for further research and development. The course spans in to fur semesters where in year one the student develops basic understandings to carry out an individual projects in their second year relevant to the areas related to polymer science and technology. This course emphasizes to develop necessary skills for the students to sustain industrial expectations and think futuristically.

Course Eligibility:

Candidates for admission to the first semester of the Post-Graduate Degree Programme shall be required to have passed an appropriate Under-Graduate Degree Examination or equivalent as specified under qualification for admission as per the Tamil Nadu Common Admission (TANCA) criteria. This is applicable for students admitted both under Single Window Counselling process and through the Management Quota.

Admission: Admissions to the M.Tech program is done on the basis of TANCET scores followed by counseling. Candidates having valid scores in the GATE entrance exam are exempted to appear for the TANCET exam. Such candidates can directly appear for counseling.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Chemistry

The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) offered by the Department of Chemistry to the post graduates to develop research culture enhancing their knowledge in chemistry. This programme runs into two semesters where the first semester involves course work followed by project work in the second semester. Admission to this programme is based on the entrance exam followed by the personal interview conducted by the university. The graduates after the completion of this programme can be employed in various industries and research organizations. After the completion of this programme the graduates are encouraged to pursue Ph.D. as a continuation of their research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry

The doctoral study (Ph.D.) in Chemistry offered by the Department of Chemistry branches out in various fields of Chemistry such as Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science, Catalysis, Nanotechnology,Environmental and Material Chemistry. The scholars are admitted twice a year during the month of January and June through a rigorous screening process conducted by Centre for Research. This programme is designed towards developing the ability to carry out creative scientific research within a duration of 3-5 years. The scholars take up course works to advance their knowledgerelated to their area of research. The scholars have the liberty to work in interdisciplinary and collaborative areas that brings out new findings and innovations. The laboratories are well equipped with adequate and sophisticated facilitates to carry out cutting edge research in chemistry leading to new findings and innovations. The sophisticated instrumentations such as SEM, GC, UTM, NMR, HPLC, TGA, FT-IR, Powder XRD and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer available under the department funded projects and DST-FIST assistance programme are available for the research scholars to bring out quality outcomes. The Ph.D. programme provides various opportunities to share and disseminate are their research findings and innovation through various platforms such as seminars conferences and publications in reputed national and international journals.

Course Eligibility:

Candidates for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme shall be required to have a Master’s Degree from the University or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in the fields of study notified from time to time by the University.A minimum of 55% marks or CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale in the qualifying examination. In case of SC/ST/ differently –Abled candidates, 50% marks or CGPA of 5.0 on a 10 point scale.
For Ph.D. Degree in Engineering/ Technology candidates should have M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Pharm. / M.S. (By Research) in the relevant branch of Engineering or Technology. For Ph.D. Degree in Science and Humanities M.Sc. / M.S. (By Research) in the relevant branch of Science
Admission: Admissions to the Ph.D. program is done by the Center for Research (CFR) through entrance test followed by interview. (Centre for Research)

Post-DoctoralFellowship (PDF) in Chemistry

The department of chemistry spreads its hands to offer post doctorate fellowship programme. The candidates who have completed their Ph.D. programme are eligible to apply according to the University norms. The post doctoral fellowship is a full time research work with duration of 2 years. Regular monitoring of fellowship is done on the basis of biannual and annual progress reports and meetings. During the course of fellowship the scholars are expected to publish at least 2 research articles in reputed national/international journals.
