Established in 1794, the iconic college has been nurturing exceptional talents in science, technology, business, and engineering. Roots of CEG dates back to May 1794 when it was formed as a School of Survey. It was established as a college in 1859 under the Madras University, and is India's oldest engineering and technical institution.
With close ties to industry, CEG’s Mechanical Department has excellent research practices and multiple extra-curricular options for the students. The Mechanical engineering course in CEG is currently approved by the AICTE - All India Council for Technical Education which was established for proper planning & co-ordinated development of technical education system throughout the country.
The Industrial Engineering programs at Anna University, as a specialization under the faculty of Mechanical Engineering has been given due recognition by forming into a division under the Department of Management studies, in the year 1973. The same division has been upgraded to a full-fledged Department of Industrial Engineering in the year 2002.

The Department of Industrial Engineering offers the following programs:
1.B.E. Industrial Engineering (Full time, 8 semesters).
2.M.E. Industrial Engineering (Full time, 4 semesters).
3.M.E. Quality Engineering and Management (Full time, 4 semesters).
4.M.E. Quality Engineering and Management (Part time evening program, 6 semesters).
5.M.S. by Research, (Full time as well as Part time).
6.Ph.D. (Full time as well as Part time).
The Industrial Engineering curriculum is designed with the core courses of Industrial Engineering in addition to the courses in Basic Sciences, Humanities, General Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, mixed with a proper proportion to make 196 credits for B.E. degree and 70 credits for M.E. degree. In the case of B.E. Industrial Engineering, the course work for the initial four semesters is common with Mechanical and Manufacturing streams.
