Coastal Regulation Zone Of Cuddalore And Villupuram District

Geographic Location:
   
This stretch begins from palar estuary and ends at Pitchavaram. Cheyyur, Marakonam , Cuddalore port, Cuddalore chemical complex , Thermal Power Plant, Chidambaram Town and Mangrove forest at Pitchavaram are the important places located along this coast. Geographically it is located between 79º 45' 31''- 80º 04' 41'' E longitude and 11º 21' 36''- 12º 14' 55'' N latitude.

Physiography:
   The northern part of the coast has sandy beach with beach sand. In the Southern part sandy beach is absent. The extreme south part of this coast is covered by swamps and mangrove forest.

Geology:
   
The geological formations of this coastal region include the upper Gondwanas and Cretaceous formations overlying unconformably the Archaean crystalline rocks. The Cretaceous are in turn overlaid by the Miopliocene formations. The alluvium and laterite of Pleistocene and recent ages overlie these formations.

Geomorphology:
   
The major geomorphic features of this coastal tract is comprised of upland plain, flood plain, deltaic plain and coastal plains. This part of the coastal plain has a width of 6km and exhibits different geomorphic features which include strandlines, raised beaches, sand dunes, mangroves swamp and tidal flats.

Coastal Regulation Zone:
   
The different coastal regulation zone class of Cuddalore and Villupuram District coast and their area extent are presented in the Table.5

Human Settlements:
   
This coastal districts comprises of ten taluks that is ., Tindivanam, Gingee, Vanur, Ulundurpetti, Kallakkurichchi, Panruti, Chidambaram, Manargudi, Tittagudi, Viruddhachalam. It covers seven urban centers - Cheyyar, Marakkanam, Kottakuppam, Cuddalore, Kurinjipati, Uadalore and Port Novo. Out of which Cuddalore is the only major urban centre with a population of 21,31,196 as per 1991 census out of this 10,79,088 are male, 10,43,671 are female and 10,66,064 are litrates. There are 44 villages in the 200m and 500m CRZ zone.

Tourism:  
   
Cuddalore, Chidambaram and Pichavaram are the important tourism places in the coast
.

Industries:
   
Sipcot Industrial complex is located in the Cuddalore. This complex covers an area of 516 acres. The following chemical industries are located in the Sipcot Industrial Complex of Cuddalore
