Mission
Management of ocean
and coastal environment and their resources for sustainable livelihood
security of coastal and ocean dependent communities and users through
research, education and training.
Activities
- Research in areas of Ocean and Coastal Resources Management
- Collection of conventional and non-conventional data and information
on various aspects of the coastal zone and oceans
- Operation of a user service in order to disseminate data and information
relating to coastal and marine resources utilization
- Exchange of data and information with other institutions in the
national and international level through information networks
- Preparation of reports and management plans for coastal and marine
area to reconcile the needs of growth and development with concern
for environmental quality
- Providing training in methodologies in coastal and marine environment
related activities
- Coordination of the operational and research requirement for
the State and Central Governments.
Achievements
- The only Institute for ocean management in the University system
- Recognized as one of the seventeen National Marine Data centres
by Department of Ocean Development, Government of India
- Recognized as the National Centre for Coastal Zone Management
by Department of Ocean Development
- Being considered as a Centre for excellence for Integrated Coastal
Zone Management by Ministry of Environment and Forest, GOI.
- Selected as one of the two national training centres by Department
For International Development (DFID), Govt. of UK for ICZM training
funded to the tune of Rs. 55 millions.
- Selected by Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft, Germany for collaborative
training programmes.
- Selected by British Council for higher education academic link
programmes with UK Universities.
- Doing collaborative research with many institutions in UK, Germany
and Netherlands.
- Published 11 books, 21 reports, 4 CD's., 350 maps and over 300
research papers.
