Home | Rushikulya: Rushikulya is one of the most important estuaries of Orissa. Geographically it is located between 19°22'-19°24'N Latitudes and 85°02'-85°05'E Longitudes. The estuary has a depth of 3.2m and it is influenced by the semidiurnal tide. The nutrient supply in the estuary is mainly from freshwater flow. Totally 89 species of phytoplankton, comprising 82 species of diatoms, 3 species of dinoflagellates, 2 species of blue green algae and 2 species of green algae have been recorded .18 species of polychaetes are recorded, which includes Nereids, Glycerides and Phyllodocids. At about 1-2 km away from the mouth, tube dwelling Eunicids, Sabellids and Terebellids are abundant. The milkfish Chanos chanos is one of the fin fishery resources of this area. Three-peak occurrence of the Chanos sp. fry is recorded during the month of August, September and April (17.52%, 14.96% and 10.1% respectively). The lowest catch of the fry is observed during December (5.66%). The variation in the distribution is related with the physical parameters (Patnaik and Misra, 1990).
